101 Word Games for Fun on the Road
Name that Tune is based on the television game show of the same name.
Hum a tune for the other players and let them gues the name of the song. Pick from rock and roll, country, top forty, jazz, blues...whatever type of music you like.
In fact, players can chose to play the game the same way as the TV show by challenging the others and humming just a few bars of a song. The winning player will guess the song in as few notes as possible.
Another way to play: An alternate verion of this game is to hum a tune (with no restriction on the number of notes) and have the other players deduce not only the name of the song, but the artist who recorded it as well.
What happens when you look in the mirror? You see a reverse image...you're actually looking at yourself backwards. Apply the same principal to words and you have an awesome word game.
Take turns thinking of words that have a meaning when they're spelled forwards and backwards.
Give one point for each letter in the word. Three letter words are worth 3 points; four letter words are worth 4 points, and so on. The person with the most points at the end of the round wins the game.
Some examples to get you started: rat/tar (3 points); stab/bats (4 points); stool/loots (5 points).
OK dude, here's your chance to play it cool, slick. Like, let's get ready and play, man.
Players think of cryptic questions in which one-word answers contain the word "man." The letters m-a-n can be anywhere in the answer -- in the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the reply.
Player one asks the group a question such as "Where's the 'man' in New York City?" The answer is "Manhattan." Player two might ask, "Who's the scariest looking 'man' in the world?" The answer is "Elephant Man." Player three might ask, "Where's the man in the orange?" The answer is "mandarin." Player four might ask the question, "Where did the man hide in the fire?" The answer is "mantle." Remember, the player asking the question must always use the word "man" in her sentence; otherwise she forfeits her turn.
The person who guesses the answer first wins the round.
Some things go together as if they were made for each other. Think about it...what would cookies be without milk? Peanut butter without jelly? Sneakers without socks?
Take turns naming two things that we all know well as pairs -- things that, when combined together, make up a perfect team. Rmember, in this case, the sum of the parts is less than the whole...
Another way to play: Pairs is not limited to things that are necessarily a positive match. Expand the game to include things that may not work together so well -- but still remain a pair. Examples: cat and dog, oil and water, salt and wound.
